Collective Action hackathon

This project, part of a Collective Action Hackathon and design sprint at the Corcoran School,

focused on workplace safety in high-risk environments like construction sites.

We identified key stakeholders, mapped common issues such as limited feedback

channels and inadequate safety training, and highlighted the need for a proactive feedback system.

Our solution included a digital platform enabling workers to report hazards, access safety resources,

and receive AI-driven insights and tutorials. By fostering engagement and providing a reliable feedback channel, the project aimed to create a culture of active participation and awareness, promoting safer and more supportive workplaces.

Situation

During a Collective Action Hackathon and design sprint organized by the Corcoran School, our team was tasked with exploring workplace safety issues, particularly in high-risk settings like construction sites. The goal was to address safety challenges by identifying gaps and creating an effective solution for enhancing worker engagement and hazard reporting.

Task

Our objective was to deeply understand the scope and scale of workplace safety concerns, focusing on issues like complacency, limited feedback channels, and inadequate injury support. We aimed to design a solution that would empower workers to actively participate in safety practices and provide feedback on workplace hazards.

Action

We started by defining the Problem Space, identifying key stakeholders such as workers, employers, trade unions, and safety regulators. We then outlined common safety challenges and mapped out interactions between these groups. In the Solution Space, we conceptualized a digital feedback platform tailored to workers' needs. This platform included features for reporting hazards, accessing safety resources, and receiving both instant and long-term safety recommendations. We structured the interface to be accessible and intuitive, integrating AI-driven solutions, feedback categorization, and tutorials to educate users on safe practices.

Result

Our final design proposed a comprehensive safety feedback system that encourages worker participation and continuous safety engagement. This platform aimed to foster a proactive culture of safety, making it easier for workers to report issues and receive timely guidance. The project successfully addressed key challenges in workplace safety, offering a user-centered solution that promotes a safer work environment through active involvement and feedback.
